Horizons is our monthly meeting on the 4th Tuesday of the month in the afternoon. We meet at 1.30pm for tea/coffee and a chat.

Our speaker then starts at 2.15pm until around 3.15pm.

The entrance fee is £3, all are welcome.

27th January, 2026: Chris Hiley:  A story from my Family History

The Highleys of Walsden – a family broken apart by the First World War. Five brothers fought for their country but only two survived.

24th February, 2026: John Coventry … In My Liverpool Home .

 Liverpool: This lively and entertaining presentation takes you from its 13th-century beginnings through time to the present-day Liverpool, and all this against a backdrop of music, memories, and magnificent buildings.

24th March, 2026: Nikki Parmenter:  Textile Talk  “Myths, Legends and Stories in Textiles and Mixed Media.”

I talk about the techniques I use that inspire me, from history, storytelling, symbolism, literature, applied arts and the Natural World.  I bring a variety of examples for members to handle and photograph.  

28thApril, 2026:  Anna Houghton:   "Mary's Meals: School + Food = Hope"

Mary’s Meals is a UK based grassroots, low cost charity. Our story starts in 1992 from a shed in the highlands of Scotland and our presentation will take you on our journey to the present day and our simple solution to world hunger.

26th May, 2026:  Bernard Nevin: Margery Booth, the 'Knickers Spy' who sang for Hitler: Margery Booth, from Wigan, is a forgotten English Opera Star from the 1930's, much admired by Hitler, who was also an undercover wartime spy.

23rd June, 2026: Debbie’s choir presents their Strictly Singing summer concert.

Tues, 28th July, 2026: Mervyn Saunders … History of the Water Rats. (Showbiz)

The Grand Order of Water Rats, which was founded in 1889 by members of the Music Hall fraternity, has since raised multi-millions of pounds for many diverse charities and has been comprised of members from all genres of the Entertainment world.

Tues 25th August, 2026:  Claire Ollet: “Everywhere the glint of gold.” 

This talk looks at the build-up to the discovery of Tutankhamen, the events of that fateful day in November 1922 (and the immediate aftermath), as well as some of the amazing artefacts that captured the imaginations of people the world over.

22nd Sept 2026: Yvonne Pinder … Adventure on Wheels

“This is a travel-based talk on a year we spent living in a motor home travelling around the USA. It is in different parts as there was way too much to have in one presentation. It includes slides, information, fancy dress and a fun quiz, ( not just us showing slides).”

Tues 27th October 2026:  Pete Turner, Magician. Misdirection. another performance by our favourite magician who dares to reveal some tricks of the trade. Or does he?
